More About Team Finland Hockey Jerseys
For a nation with a population of only about 5.4 million people Finland sure manages to make an impact on the international ice hockey stage. The pesky Finns are always in the mix at every event, often playing the role of spoilers against nations like Canada and Russia, winning games through a combination of stingy goaltending, tight defense and timely scoring from their stars.
Finns in the NHL
Though only a small percentage of NHL players hail from Finland, they have produced some huge stars over the years. The first major star to Hail from the Northern European nation was Jari Kurri, who for years starred on the right wing beside Wayne Gretzky when the two played together on the powerful Edmonton Oilers teams of the 1980s. Though cynics claim that the bulk of Kurri's success came as a result of playing with "The Great One", a look at Kurri's year by year stats would change their minds. In the year following Gretzky's fateful trade from the Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings, Kurri actually had more points (102) than the previous season (96). In 1990, Kurri played a huge role as the Oilers defeated Gretzky's Kings en route to their 5th Stanley Cup. Kurri scored almost 1,400 points in the NHL and inspired a generation of young Finnish players whose dream evolved from one day wearing a Team Finland hockey jersey to one day wearing an NHL jersey.
One of those players that Kurri inspired was none other than Teemu Selanne, who erupted on the NHL scene in the 1992-93 with the Winnipeg Jets. Selanne absolutely shatter rookie records for goals (76) - the previous record was 53 by Mike Bossy - and points (132) - a mark previously held by Peter Stastny. Selanne has gone on to record well over 1,200 points in the NHL and has now inspired yet another generation just as Kurri did before hm.
Though these are certainly the most well known Finnish hockey stars they are far from the only ones. Esa Tikkanen, Saku Koivu, Mikko Koivu, Miikka Kiprusoff and Niklas Backstrom are just a handful of the many other Finland-born players who've made significant impacts in both the NHL, and wearing Finnish jerseys on the international stage.
