More About Joe Thornton Jerseys

When you look at the numbers that Joe Thornton has put up since he arrived to join the San Jose Sharks it is hard to believe that the Boston Bruins traded him. Of course, the same thing can be said of the Wayne Gretzky trade from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings. No one is untouchable in this sport. In some cases all a player needs to truly reach his potential is a change of scenery and that was certainly the case with Jumbo Joe.

Thornton Goes #1 Overall in the Draft

After an OHL season that saw him net 41 goals and 122 points for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Joe Thornton was snagged first overall in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft by the Boston Bruins. Thornton's towering size combined with his skill made Thornton a coveted prospect in much the same way that Vincent Lecavalier was the following year, or that Mario Lemieux had been back in 1984 for the Pittsburgh Penguins. Unfortunately for Joe and the Bruins his career didn't start off with the same bang that Lemieux's did.

Thornton's first year was disappointing to say the least. Though he had been considered a potential Calder Trophy contender, Thornton was a non-factor in his first season and was a healthy scratch on several occasions. That first year he would only play in 55 games, registering a paltry 3 goals and 7 points.

However, though he may have been a later bloomer than everyone expected, Thornton managed to steadily improve, putting up 41, 60 and 71 points respectively over the next three seasons.

Thornton Becomes a Captain

In the 2002-03, following the departure of former Bruins captain Jason Allison to the Los Angeles Kings, the Bruins named Jumbo Joe their new captain. Rather than wilting under the added pressure, Thornton embraced the challenge and responded with his best offensive season to date, registering 101 points. However, 2003-04 was a different story, with Thornton only managing 73 points. The playoffs were a disaster, as Thornton was held without a point in 7 games as the Bruins were ushered from the playoffs. Though Thornton endured criticism for his leadership ability, and was himself not happy with the direction of the team he signed on to stay in Boston, inking a 3 year, $20 million deal following the lockout year of 2004-05.

Joe Thornton is Traded to the San Jose Sharks

Despite the rich new contract the relationship between Thornton and the Bruins continued to be acrimonious. On November 30, 2005 the issue was resolved once and for all as Thornton was sent to the San Jose Sharks in a deal that brought Marco Sturm and Brad Stuart back the other way.

Whether he just needed a change of scenery, or whether he was determined to prove to the Bruins they'd made a mistake, Thornton was a different player for the remainder of that season, tearing up the league, and finding instant chemistry with new linemate Jonathan Cheechoo. In the final 58 games with the Sharks Thornton put up a whopping 92 points, surging to the front of the scoring race. He finished the season with 125 points, earning both the Art Ross and Hart Trophies. Cheechoo was the biggest benefactor, winning the Rocket Richard Trophy with 56 goals, almost all of them scored after the arrival of Thornton.

In the years since the trade Thornton has continued to put up terrific numbers. Though his favorite winger - Cheechoo - has since moved on, Thornton got an upgrade in the form of Dany Heatley, formerly of the Ottawa Senators. Thornton's passing ability meshes perfectly with Heatley's shoot first mentality, and the pair were a force in their first season together. However, Thornton's playoff play has continued to haunt him during his time with the club, and though the Sharks continue to challenge for the President's Trophy every season they inexplicably cannot seem to raise their game in the playoffs, and have never made it beyond the semi-finals.

Joe Thornton's International Career

Though he has had trouble winning at the NHL level, Thornton has had no such difficulties at the international level. He has gold medals from the 1997 World Juniors, the 2004 World Cup of Hockey and the 2010 Winter Olympics, as well as a silver medal from the 2005 World Championships, and has been a versatile player for his country, even serving in a 4th line shutdown role from time to time.

Though he has yet to give the Sharks fans the Stanley Cup they so badly want Thornton still remains immensely popular and Joe Thornton jerseys are always in high demand.
