More About Sidney Crosby Jerseys

The 2005 NHL draft was a unique moment in the history of the NHL. Following the lost season of 2004-05 due to the NHL lockout the league found themselves with a conundrum. Traditionally the regular season standings of the season previous determined what order teams would select in. Since there was no season in 2004-05 the NHL had no way to determine the draft order. So, in order to make it fair for every team they held a 30 team draft lottery, where every team would have an equal opportunity to acquire the number one draft selection.

To further complicate matters up for grabs in the draft was a once in a generation player. Not since Eric Lindros had a prospect been as highly touted as Sidney Crosby. A junior star with the Rimouski Oceanic and with Canada's World Junior team, Crosby was immensely talented at a young age, and many believed he had the on-ice vision and talent to be as good as former Edmonton Oilers superstar Wayne Gretzky.

Hockey fans across North America waited with breath held to see which NHL club would land the coveted prospect. In the end only the Anaheim Ducks and the Pittsburgh Penguins remained. When the second last ball displayed the Ducks logo, Pittsburgh fans went wild, knowing they had acquired a star that had the potential to be as good as Mario Lemieux or Jaromir Jagr, two of the Penguins all time greats. Sidney Crosby jerseys were a hot commodity as fans rushed to embrace their new Messiah.

Sidney Crosby's Rookie Year

Had it not been for the NHL lockout there is little question that Crosby would have easily mopped up the competition when it came to the Calder Trophy race. Okay, Dion Phaneuf of the Calgary Flames could have pushed him a little, but even he was a level below Sid the Kid. However, because of the lost year, Russian superstar Alexander Ovechkin was playing in his inaugural campaign with the Washington Capitals. As a result the two went head to head all year to see who would win the rookie of the year award. In the end, Ovechkin's 52 goals and 106 points (4 more than Crosby) gave the hulking Russian winger the nod. Crosby did set a team record with 102 points as a rookie, eclipsing Mario Lemieux's old mark of 100 which he set in the 1983-84 season.

Crosby's Revenge

It wouldn't take Crosby long to even the score with his nemesis. The following year Crosby would take the league by storm. #87 racked up 120 points that year, becoming the first teenager in any professional sport ever to lead the league in scoring. In addition to the Art Ross Trophy, Crosby would also take home the Hart Trophy as NHL MVP.

The 2007-08 regular season would be a bit of a write-off for Crosby. With injuries limiting him to 53 games, Crosby would only put up 72 points, and was forced to watch as Ovechkin took the Art Ross as the league's leading scorer that year. However, Crosby would get the last laugh as his Pittsburgh Penguins advanced through the playoffs, while Ovie and the Caps were eliminated in the first round by the Philadelphia Flyers. Crosby and the Pens would make it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals before finally getting knocked out in 6 games by the Detroit Red Wings.

Sid's Stanley Cup

One of the more memorable commercials the next NHL season featured Crosby sitting dejectedly as the Wings celebrated their Stanley Cup win. He declared solemnly that he never wanted to be in that picture again. Proving true to his word, Crosby entered play in the 2008-09 determined to take that final step to Stanley Cup glory. He finished the season with 103 points, this time finishing behind Ovechkin and teammate Evgeni Malkin in the Art Ross race. However, personal goals were set on the back-burner. After defeating the Flyers in the first round, Crosby and the Pens met up with Ovie and the Caps in round two. In a battle for the ages the Pens prevailed, winning handily in game 7 to move on. Crosby would then lead them past the Eric Staal, Cam Ward and the Carolina Hurricanes before moving on to a rematch against the Detroit Red Wings for the Stanley Cup.

The series was closer than the first one had been, and the Pens were determined not to let the experienced Red Wings dictate the pace and physical play of the series. With Crosby at the helm the Pens fought for every inch of ice, and ultimately prevailed in game 7, earning victory in the enemy's rink by a 2-1 score. By leading his team to glory, the young man in the Sidney Crosby jersey became the youngest player to ever captain a team to a Stanley Cup.

Crosby the Goal Scorer

In 2009-10 Crosby reinvented himself once again. Known first and foremost as a gifted playmaker, Sid proved he was a more than capable goal scorer. He dueled with Ovechkin and Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning throughout the season for the league lead in goals, and when the final whistle blew in game 82 he had scored 51 goals, good enough for a share of the Rocket Richard Trophy with Stamkos, and one more than rival Ovechkin.

How will Crosby reinvent himself in 2010-11? Time will tell. One thing is for certain - after a devastating playoff loss to his childhood idol Montreal Canadiens Crosby will be hungry to get his mitts back on the cup. Woe to anyone who gets in his way.
