More About Steve Yzerman Jerseys

If there is a man in NHL history that can challenge Jean Beliveau for the title of the classiest hockey player of all time it is definitely Stevie Y. This warrior defined class and integrity during his playing days, and during his long tenure as captain of the Detroit Red Wings he was one of the greatest leader the game has ever seen. Though he has now moved on to the Tampa Bay Lightning in a General Manager's role his Steve Yzerman jerseys are still among the most popular kit among Detroit fans.

After a couple of years in junior where he was a standout with the Peterborough Petes, Steve Yzerman made his NHL debut with the Detroit Red Wings. He would be a superstar right from the get-go, scoring 39 goals and piling up 87 in his rookie campaign. He would have won rookie of the year honors had it not been for the fact that he had the bad luck of joining the league the same year Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins did. Lemieux would trump Yzerman with 100 points to capture the Calder Trophy that year.

Yzerman's incredible rookie year was a sign of things to come and he continued to pile up points year after year. As a 21 year old the young star would assume the mantle of leadership as the Wings named him their new captain. Yzerman didn't let the yoke of responsibility interfere with his performance on the ice. In his first season as captain he registered 90 points. The following year he would reach both the 50 goal and 100 point plateaus. In year three he had a monster season, scoring 65 goals and racking up 155 points. He'd score over 60 again the following season, becoming one of just a handful of NHL stars - an exclusive group whose only other members are Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Brett Hull, Phil Esposito, Jari Kurri and Pavel Bure - to register back to back 60 goal seasons.

Despite his incredible offensive gifts Yzerman was often criticized for his lack of defense and rumors started to swirl that Yzerman might be traded, a not unthinkable scenario considering the Gretzky trade from the Edmonton Oilers to Los Angeles Kings a few years before. In the end coach Scotty Bowman and Yzerman finally got on the same page. Yzerman's offensive numbers dropped, but his two-way game improved immensely.

With help arriving from stars like Sergei Fedorov, Yzerman didn't need to put up two points a night in order for his team to win. As more star power arrived in Detroit Yzerman was suddenly captaining a team with a legitimate shot at the Stanley Cup.

After a huge disappointment in which the Wings were swept in the Stanley Cup Finals by a young goalie by the name of Martin Brodeur and his New Jersey Devils, Yzerman and his mates got another chance in 1997. This time the opponent was Eric Lindros and the Philadelphia Flyers. Yzerman led the Wings to a 4-0 sweep of the Flyers, delivering the fans in Detroit their first Stanley Cup in 42 years. Steve Yzerman jerseys were suddenly all the rage again, and all thoughts of trading the captain were dispelled.

In 1998 Yzerman and the Wings repeated the feat, this time demolishing the Washington Capitals in the finals to take home the cup once more. Yzerman registered 24 points in 22 games, earning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP.

After a few years where Stevie Y and the Wings were forced to watch rivals like the Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars and New Jersey Devils share the Stanley Cup, the captain finally got one more chance to sip from the silver chalice. Playing virtually on one knee, Yzerman put on one of the gutsiest performances in NHL history, leading his club to victories over the Vancouver Canucks, St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche and ultimately the Carolina Hurricanes to capture the Stanley Cup for the third time in six years. Amazingly, Yzerman, who scored 23 points in 23 GP that playoff run, was overlooked for what should have been his 2nd Conn Smythe Trophy.

Yzerman Calls it a Career

Much like Bobby Orr before him, a knee injury would ultimately determine the time of Yzerman's retirement. Knowing he would be a liability to his team, Yzerman showed his class one more time, hanging up the skates following the 2005-06 season. In his incredible career, he'd won the cup three times, won the Lester B. Pearson, played in the NHL All Star Game 10 times, won the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP and taken home the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the league's top defensive forward. The only major piece of hardware missing from his trophy case is the Hart and he is arguably the greatest player never to have won it. His tenure as captain of the Red Wings is the longest with a single team in NHL history.

Steve Yzerman's International Career

Though Yzerman played his entire NHL career in a Detroit Red Wings jersey Canadian fans got multiple opportunities to cheer for him. He starred for Team Canada at the World Juniors, the World Championship, the 1984 Canada Cup, and twice at the Winter Olympic Games, helping them win the gold medal over the Americans in Salt Lake City, Utah in 2002.

Known simply as "The Captain" his achievements are already legendary, and Steve Yzerman jerseys, like those of another Red Wings icon - Gordie Howe - before him will no doubt continue to be hugely popular among dedicated Red Wings fans for many decades to come.
