More About Team USA Hockey Jerseys

The traditionally not known as a hockey power, Team USA's improbably 1980 "Miracle on Ice" gold medal victory in Lake Placid really put American hockey on the map, and has inspired generations of young hockey stars to dream of putting on a Team USA hockey jersey and representing their country at the Olympics.

Miracle on Ice

Though Team USA defeated Finland to win the Gold Medal in 1980, it is actually the round-robin game between the Americans and the powerful Soviet squad that the "Miracle on Ice" refers to. On paper it was a huge mismatch. The Soviets had won every Olympic Gold ice hockey medal since 1964, and had only lost a single game in that span. The Soviet squad was loaded with stars, including Vladislav Tretiak, Boris Mikhailov, Valeri Kharlamov, Alexandr Maltsev, Sergei Makarov, and Vladimir Krutov. The American squad, on the other hand, had only a single player over the age of 22, and consisted mostly of US College hockey players. Team captain Mike Eruzione never played any high level hockey after the Olympic win, but players like Neal Broten, Ken Morrow and Mike Ramsey went on to enjoy successful NHL careers.

The now legendary Herb Brooks coached the American squad, employing a hard work ethic, and pushing the players to the very edge of their endurance to help them prepare for their games. Though his disciplinary style might not have been popular with the players, it was certainly effective. Team USA staved off three separate USSR leads to eke out a 4-3 win, stunning the Soviets and the hockey world, just as they had 20 years early in the 1960 Olympics in Squaw Valley. The team would later secure their place in hockey lore by coming back to beat Finland 4-2 and earn the Olympic Gold Medal.

1996 World Cup

The Americans' next taste of international glory would come in 1996. Formerly known as the Canada Cup, that year the Canadian-hosted tournament would be renamed the World Cup to more accurately reflect the international nature of the competition. Team USA had never traditionally enjoyed much success at the event, but this time around they were ready to make a serious charge. Loaded with stars like Mike Modano, Brett Hull, Pat LaFontaine, Doug Weight, Bill Guerin, Keith Tkachuk, Chris Chelios and Mike Richter, all in the prime of their respective careers, the Americans iced perhaps their most talented international squad ever. They were a force throughout the tournament, and in the finals were too much for an equally impressive Canadian squad playing on their home soil, defeating them 5-2 in the third game of a best of 3 to capture the World Cup.

Team USA Today

Hockey continues to go stronger in the U.S. with each passing year, and more and more young stars are emerging that will one day wear a Team USA hockey jersey. At the 2010 Olympics the young American team, led by Ryan Miller, Patrick Kane, Zach Parise, Phil Kessel, Bobby Ryan and Paul Stastny, almost played spoilers, giving the home favorite Canadian squad all they could handle - beating them in the round robin, and forcing them to overtime in the Gold Medal game. Though the Americans only managed to capture silver that year they are loaded with young talent, and will no doubt be a significant Gold Medal threat at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia.
