More About Atlanta Flames Jerseys

The Atlanta Flames franchise was born a little bit by accident. The NHL had initially had no plans for expansion prior to the start of the 1972-73 season. However, with the WHA eyeballing the brand new Nassau Coliseum on Long Island the league granted a franchise to the New York Islanders to keep the rival league out. However, they needed a second team to join the league at the same time in order to balance the schedule. Though the southern states wasn't considered an ideal hockey market, the city of Atlanta did have one thing going fo them: they had just built a new arena for their basketball franchise. The new venue, the Omni Coliseum was a key component in the ownership group's bid to bring hockey to Atlanta. With the pieces in place, the NHL granted them their franchise and thus the Flames were born.

Ownership wasted no time getting a management team in place, bring in Cliff Fletcher from the St. Louis Blues organization and hiring former Montreal Canadiens' sniper Bernie "Boom Boom" Geoffrion as bench-boss. They adopted a flaming A as their logo, giving them one of the more stylish jerseys of their era.

The team fared reasonably well in its inaugural season, and though they finished out of the playoffs that year, they managed 65 points, a whopping 35 more than their expansion cousins, the New York Islanders. There was hope they could quickly build a team that could contend with the NHL's elite clubs.

The second season only reinforced that hope. The club drafted both Tom Lysiak and Eric Vail that year. Lysiak made an immediate impact and actually led the club in scoring, helping the Flames make the playoffs in only their second season. They would succumb to the powerful Philadelphia Flyers in the first round, however, so did three other teams as the Broad Street Bullies went on to capture their first of two consecutive Stanley Cups.

The following season was a step backward for the Flames, despite 39 goals from Eric Vail, who played his first full season with the club. The team missed the playoffs, and coach Geoffrion, who had been runner-up as coach of the year the season previous, resigned.

The next few seasons saw the club improve gradually, with players like Guy Chouinard, Willie Plett, Bill Clement, Ivan Boldirev, Darcy Rota, Kent Nilsson and Paul Reinhart all donning Atlanta Flames jerseys. However, attendance continued to decline, and ownership's inability to secure a major television deal put them in a financial pressure cooker.

The 1979-80 season was the last for the Atlanta Flames. Following that season the franchise was sold to a group of Calgary businessmen for the record sum of $16 million. The pieces that Fletcher had put in place ensured that the team would be competitive right off the hop in Calgary, and the Flames would twice reach the Stanley Cup Finals, winning one championship in the decade following their relocation.

Today, Atlanta has once again got an NHL team to cheer for in the form of the Atlanta Thrashers. However, old-timers in the city still remember the glory days of the Flaming A, and Atlanta Flames jerseys are still very much in demand by collectors of vintage NHL gear.
