More About Colorado Rockies Jerseys

Longtime fans of the sport of hockey remember a time when there was another NHL franchise besides the Colorado Avalanche residing in the city of Denver. From 1976-1982 the Colorado Rockies tried to make a go of it in the Mile High City.

Originally the Kansas City Scouts, a 1974 NHL expansion team, the franchise moved to Colorado prior to the 1976-77 season after the Scouts sold an abysmal 2,000 season tickets. The move wouldn't improve the franchise's fortunes, however. They compiled one losing season after another, and the team couldn't seem to win at home or on the road.

The club did boast a few stars during its existence. Barry Beck set an NHL record for most goals by a rookie defenseman as a member of the Rockies. The club also acquired Toronto Maple Leafs scoring star Lanny McDonald via trade. Other notable players that donned a Colorado Rockies jersey include Wilf Paiement, Bobby Schmautz, Chico Resch, Rene Robert, and Rob Ramage.

The team's most famous personality wasn't a player, but rather their coach. The club hired former Boston Bruins' bench-boss, and future Hockey Night in Canada personality Don Cherry to helm the team. Cherry brought in a system based on toughness, but fared no better than his predecessors. Cherry lasted a single season behind the bench, winning just 19 of 80 games. The .319 winning percentage was about half of the career average he'd enjoyed as a coach of the Boston Bruins.

The team lasted two more seasons in Colorado before the team pulled up stakes and moved to New Jersey, becoming the Devils franchise still in existence today. Colorado would spend 13 seasons without an NHL club until the Quebec Nordiques relocated to Denver in 1995 to become the Colorado Avalanche.

Though they only spent six seasons in the NHL, and never came close to a winning season, Colorado Rockies jerseys are still highly sought after by collectors of vintage NHL gear.
