More About Hartford Whalers Jerseys

The Whalers franchise began its existence in the NHL rival league - The World Hockey Association. In 1971 the WHA awarded a franchise to a consortium of New England businessmen. The new owners would waste no time making their team competitive, signing a bevy of talented players, including Rick Ley, Ted Green, Tom Webster and Larry Pleau.

With a core of ex-NHL players and ex-U.S. Olympians leading the way the then New England Whalers would lead the league in points during the 1972-73 season. During playoff time they didn't take their foot off the pedal, tearing up the rest of the league, and winning the WHA's first Avco World Trophy (the WHA equivalent of the NHL's Stanley Cup).

Over the first couple of seasons the team split its home games between the Boston Arena and Boston Garden. However, scheduling would become a major headache, as the team had to share the Garden with the original six NHL franchise Boston Bruins. In order to alleviate the growing problem the owners pulled up stakes and moved the team to Hartford, Connecticut. Despite the move, the team retained the moniker New England Whalers for the remainder of their WHA days.

The club would never be able to replicate the success they enjoyed in that first season, and couldn't quite get their mitts on another Avco World Cup. They did come close in 1978, when a team led by then 50 year old Gordie Howe, and his two sons Mark and Marty went to the finals. However, even the legendary Mr. Hockey couldn't deliver the Whalers another championship.

The NHL Years: One of the most stable franchises in the World Hockey Association the Whalers were one of four teams that stayed afloat when the WHA merged with the NHL prior to the 1979-80 season. However, it was determined at that time that the team would drop the prefix New England from their name, and thus the Hartford Whalers were born.

The Hartford Whalers' 18 year history in the NHL was one fraught with more failure than success, and the club would only record 3 winning seasons over that stretch, and would only win a single playoff series. However, despite their difficulties winning the Whalers enjoyed a rabid fan base that supported their team through thick and thin.

Though they never had much team success the Whalers did have their fair share of great players grace their roster. Gordie Howe played his final NHL season with the club, netting a respectable 18 goals at the ripe old age of 52.

Mike Rogers spent two full NHL seasons with the club before being dealt to the New York Rangers, and scored 105 points in each. In later days the club would welcome stars like Ron Francis, Kevin Dineen, Mike Liut, Sean Burke, Ray Ferraro, Sylvain Turgeon, Dave Babych, Ulf Samuelsson, Brendan Shanahan and Chris Pronger.

Ultimately, the lack of winning and of corporate sponsorship would spell the end of the Whalers as an NHL franchise. New owner, Compuware founder Peter Karmanos would move the team to Carolina prior to the 1997-98 season, and the club shed the Whalers moniker for good, becoming the Carolina Hurricanes.

Now, more than a decade after their departure, the Hartford Whalers franchise still remains near and dear to the hearts of hockey fans everywhere, and Hartford Whalers jerseys are amongst the most sought after vintage hockey apparel. Fans continue to lobby for the return of their beloved Whalers franchise to Hartford, hoping against hope to one day hear the team's theme some - Brass Bonanza - blared out in an NHL arena once again.
