More About Kansas City Scouts Jerseys

Though many knowledgeable hockey fans remember that the New Jersey Devils franchise was once known as the Colorado Rockies, few realize that the franchise actually began in Kansas City, playing under the moniker of the Scouts.

In 1974 the Kansas City Scouts and the Washington Capitals joined the NHL. Originally the club was supposed to be named the Mohawks, but the Chicago Blackhawks objected to the name, claiming it was too similar to their own, and the decision was made to label the team the Scouts instead.

They didn't exactly set the league on fire out of the gate. Due to construction delays on the Kemper Arena where the club was supposed to play its home games, the Scouts had to start their NHL existence by playing their first eight games on the road. In that span they only managed a single tie to go along with seven losses. The inauspicious start would be a sign of things to come, and the club put up a measly 41 points in its first season.

With such a poor record in their inaugural season fans had every reason to believe there was nowhere to go but up. They were wrong. The club only managed 36 points in their second campaign, earning just a single win in their final 44 games. The 36 points still stands as the franchise's (including as the Colorado Rockies and New Jersey Devils) record for futility. The only bright spot for the club was that they managed to finish ahead of their expansion cousins from Washington, who managed to set an NHL record for fewest points in a single season.

With poor on-ice performance and an economic downtown in the region it was little wonder the franchise had trouble selling season tickets. After they only managed to get 2,000 tickets sold prior to the 1976-77 the club was relocated to Colorado where they would continue as the Colorado Rockies from 1976-1982.

The fact that they only lasted two season in the NHL makes vintage Kansas City Scouts jerseys a hot commodity among collectors and students of the game.
