More About Minnesota North Stars Jerseys

One of the original expansion teams from when the NHL doubled in size from the "Original Six" to 12 teams in 1967, the Minnesota North Stars, though now defunct, is a franchise rich in history. The team, prior to moving to Dallas, spent 26 full seasons in the league, reaching the Stanley Cup finals on two occasions (1981 and 1991). The name North Stars is derived from the Minnesota state motto - Star of the North - and for a while the team thrived in the hockey-mad market.

In their first full season in the NHL the North Stars, led by veterans like Lorne "Gump Worsley", Cesare Maniago, J.P. Parise and Bill Goldsworthy, advanced to within a single game of the Stanley Cup final before bowing out to Scotty Bowman's St. Louis Blues. It would take more than a decade of mediocrity before the franchise once again began to thrive.

The 80's brought plenty of excitement as draft picks like Bobby Smith and Dino Ciccarelli finally made the North Stars into a bona fide threat. The Stars, led by their young stars, made it to the Stanley Cup Finals in 1981. In the end they couldn't handle the sheer power of the New York Islanders, who were in the peak of their dynasty and dispatched the Stars in 5 games.

When the North Stars drafted young phenom Brian Bellows the following year expectations were sky-high. However, Norris division rivals - the Chicago Blackhawks, led by superstar Denis Savard, ended fans hopes of a second straight crack at the Stanley Cup in the second round of the playoffs that year.

After reaching the semi-finals in 1983-84 the North Stars saw their fortunes gradually fall, and in the years to come they only managed to eclipse the .500 mark on one occasion. They hit rock bottom in the 1987-88 season, finishing with a woeful 19 wins and a paltry 51 points, a poor enough performance for last place overall in the NHL. The last place finish would be an important milestone in the history of the franchise, giving them the #1 overall pick in the 1988 entry, with which they selected American Mike Modano.

Modano would become an instant superstar, and for several years was one of the most dynamic, exciting players in the league. Only a few years later Modano would lead the North Stars to their second Stanley Cup Finals appearance. Again they ran into a powerful opponent in Mario Lemieux's Pittsburgh Penguins. They acquitted themselves well, but ultimately lost in game six of the series.

That run was the last bit of glory North Stars fans would enjoy. Team owner Norm Green couldn't negotiate a deal for a new arena, and though he had once famously asserted that, "Only an idiot could lose money on hockey in Minnesota", apparently he managed to do just that. In the end the franchise was moved to Dallas where the team would go on to win the 1999 Stanley Cup.

Minnesota didn't languish without a hockey team for long, as in 2000-01 the state saw the arrival of the Minnesota Wild. The Wild have given the passionate hockey fans in Minnesota a team to cheer for once again, but older fans still assert that the original team never should have left, and at any Wild home game you can see hundreds of Minnesota North Stars jerseys sprinkled through the crowd.
